When he’s not busy appearing for a cameo on Deadpool & Wolverine, noted nerd Henry Cavill has often been spotted painting Warhammer 40,000 miniatures or playing on his PC gaming rig. Recently, the movie star combined both hobbies and sat down to play Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. His verdict? “This game is the mutt’s…..”
The ex-DCU star seems to have had a lot of time on his hands recently with box office flop The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare already out and filming on In the Grey, a Guy Ritchie flick co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, having wrapped last year. In-between smoking big hunks of meat, it turns out Cavill has been grinding through Space Marine 2. He shared his assessment with fans earlier this week on Instagram:
Seriously, though, they’ve done pretty well eh? I couldn’t complete the campaign on Angel of Death by myself (or at least didn’t have patience to complete by myself!) which I love!
Loving the PvP and am really looking forward to it growing and expanding – It has real potential to be absolutely awesome! Disclaimer: I know nothing about game development so the kind of dreams I have may be rather difficult to implement!
The approval came alongside a photo of his custom Space Marine and a coffee table sighting of “Horus Heresy Book 2,” which a reader notes is an outdated rule book from the earlier incarnation of the Horus Heresy tabletop miniatures game often referred to as Warhammer 30k. Maybe it’s just some light reading to expand on the his general Warhammer obsession, or maybe it’s a bit of extra preparation for Cavill’s reported participation in an upcoming adaptation by Amazon.

Warhammer makers Games Workshop and Amazon’s entertainment division have been in talks for a while now to nail down film and TV series based on the grim dark fantasy games. It seemed like a good fit for Cavill, who had preliminarily signed on following his weird split with the Netflix Witcher series where he was replaced for seasons four and five by Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. But the two sides have apparently been facing some disagreements, and the deal will reportedly fall apart if an agreement isn’t reached by the end of 2024.
Given the success of Amazon’s Fallout TV series, it would be neat to see what could happen with a Warhammer 40K show if enough talent and money were thrown its way. But even if that never comes to fruition, it sounds like we’ll at least be getting more Space Marine 2 DLC and sequel sometime in the future. Maybe by then Cavill will have finished the current game on Angel of Death difficulty.
Correction 9/25/2024 9:40 a.m. ET: The book on Cavill’s table was not a novel.
