System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian released his new solo EP Foundations today, and with it he dropped a little treat for fans: a video for the track “Cartoon Buyer” from the EP. You might thin that a video for a song called “Cartoon Buyer” would be animated, but, quite on the contrary, the video is a simple live-action video of Tankian and his band playing the song, with Tankian starting off with a simple acoustic guitar piece before moving into something that gets bigger, louder, and more intense as it goes on.
“I am incredibly excited to announce that my brand new ‘Foundations’ EP is OUT TODAY via #GibsonRecords!” wrote Tankian on Facebook, celebrating his new release. “To celebrate, we’ve dropped the music video for ‘Cartoon Buyer’ – featuring John Dolmayan and the F.C.C., directed by my good friend Ara Soudjian.”
Dolmayan is, of course, the drummer for System of a Down, a position he’s held since 1997, making this a partial reunion of System of a Down members for this particular single. Ara Soudjian is an award-winning filmmaker known for and owner of a company called Friendly Filmworks. Soudjian also directed the videos for previous Serj Tankian singles off the EP “A.F. Day” and “Justice Will Shine On,” as well as the video for the 2020 System of a Down track “Protect the Land” and the video for the 2008 Wiz Khalifa track “Say Yeah.”
Foundations is out now and you can order it off Serj Tankian’s website.
